Apple iPad 2: review

The iPad 2 refines last year’s product, adds a few premium features and makes a very tempting package.
As anyone who has followed technology news this month will know by now, the iPad 2 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor. Although the difference in weight is a mere 100 grams, the slimness of this year’s model creates the illusion that it is lighter still. This further helps with the iPad’s greatest trick: seeming to disappear and become whatever app you’re using.
And there are apps by the thousand. Around 65,000, in fact, which gives Apple an enormous head start over the competition. Those apps will run faster too, thanks to the iPad 2’s A5 dual core processor. The new iPad runs up to twice as fast and graphics performance is nine-times faster. The speed improvements can be seen on almost any app; the original iPad didn’t feel sluggish before but it will after you’ve spent some time with the iPad 2.
The improvement in graphics performance is most noticeable on games such as Infinity Blade, which looks truly stunning on the iPad 2. Real Racing 2 has been upgraded to take advantage of the new graphics capability as well and more and more titles will follow in the coming weeks.
The other significant addition are the cameras: one on front and one on the back of the iPad 2. The rear camera is capable of 720p HD video but, as with the one in the iPod touch, it’s a mediocre stills camera. The front-facing camera, for video conferencing, is VGA - and also works as a stills camera.
Now it has cameras, the iPad 2 joins the iPhone 4 and iPod touch in getting FaceTime, Apple’s video chat app. In tests - calling an iPhone 4 from an iPad 2, it worked very well. While the picture quality was not pin-sharp, the call was smooth and uninterrupted. It’s easy to see this being a boon to people who travel a lot or those whose friends and family are far away.
Last year Apple showed off the capabilities of their new device by producing versions of their iWork productivity suite: word processor Pages; spreadsheet application Numbers; and presentation tool Keynote. This year they’ve brought two of their iLife apps to the iPad: GarageBand and iMovie.
Garageband takes the popular music-making program from the Mac and takes it far beyond what a desktop app is capable of. The iPad becomes a musical instrument and Garageband allows you to layer tracks together to produce songs. For the musically-challenged, like me, there are ‘smart instruments’, which are designed to sound good together. Even more clever is the use of the accelerometer to determine, with surprising precision, how hard you’re pressing the keys on your keyboard or banging your drum.
Then there’s iMovie, which uses the extra screen real estate of the iPad to offer a well-equipped video editor. It’s designed for the touchscreen and the controls are very simple but there’s some very powerful options for those who know what they’re doing. While not for everyone, I can see both these apps becoming essentials for a lot of people.
There are several other additions. There’s the HDMI-out accessory that allows you to mirror your iPad’s screen on your television, for example, and the addition of a gyroscope that allows the iPad 2 to match the iPhone 4’s gaming capabilities. However, the one that I want to spend a little more time on is the Smart Cover.

The original iPad cover was a triumph of practicality over design. It collected dust, had a strange rubbery texture and felt very un-Apple. That said, it did protect the iPad and folded back neatly into a stand. The Smart Cover, on the other hand, is a triumph of design and practicality. Hooking magnetically onto the side of the iPad 2, it covers the screen and closes with a reassuring click - magnets again - putting the device to sleep as it does so. Peel it back and the device wakes up. Meanwhile, the cover folds underneath to create a stand. Throughout it all, the beauty of the iPad design remains visible. The Smart Cover costs £35 in polyurethane and £59 in leather but the iPad 2 doesn’t feel complete without one.
To add to the iPad 2’s smooth looks, there’s also a white version this year. Personally, I’m not a fan. As I mentioned above, I like the iPad to disappear when I’m using an app and I find the white border around the iPad screen too distracting. There will be plenty who disagree with me, however.
Are there weaknesses? I suppose so but you have to look quite hard to find them. There are rivals out there with higher specs certainly, but the iPad 2 never feels like it’s struggling. Famously, the iPad doesn’t support Flash but after a year using the first iPad I can honestly say that I scarcely miss it. Finally, there’s the size; some people think the iPad is just too big. For them a 7-inch tablet is probably ideal but I remain unconvinced by those. I want a tablet, not a big smartphone.
The iPad 2 does everything that made the original iPad such a revelation but it does them better. At £399 for the basic model - 16GB and wifi-only - it’s hard to resist, though those with a bit more to spend should consider the 32GB model with wifi and 3G (£579). The extra storage is worth it and cheap 3G plans mean you have the option of using the iPad when wifi is unavailable. Those who travel a lot will want a 64GB model so that they can carry a selection of films but most of us won’t need so much storage.
Whichever model you choose, there’s no reason to wait. Now is the perfect time to join the iPad club.

Google accuses China of blocking Gmail

Google is the most popular engineering employer to work for, according to a new study.

Over the past few weeks, access to Gmail has been intermittent for users inside China, and some foreign journalists have reported that their accounts have been hacked into.
The problems have coincided with what appears to be an intensified campaign by the authorities to control the internet, following the unrest in the Middle East and a series of calls on the web for a similar "Jasmine" revolution in China.
Google said its engineers could find no technical problems with Gmail or its main website.
"There is no technical issue on our side; we have checked extensively. There is a [Chinese] government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail," the company said in a statement.
Two weeks ago, Google also said that it had noticed "some highly targeted and apparently politically-motivated attacks against our users" in China. "We believe activists may have been a specific target," it added.
Google decided to close down its mainland China website and relocate its operations to Hong Kong following a series of attacks from Chinese hackers at the end of 2009.
The hackers stole some Google source code and also gained access to the private Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights advocates.
The Chinese Foreign ministry had no immediate comment on Google's statement.
Meanwhile, computer analysts also said that China has rolled out a new layer of censorship infrastructure to prevent internet users inside China from "jumping over" the Great Firewall.
Until now, internet users, including many businesses inside China, have established private networks which help them circumvent censorship and send information confidentially.
However, several companies providing these "virtual private networks" have reported that their systems have been nullified in the past week.

Over 4,000 cities to turn off lights during Earth Hour

Earth Hour is organised annually on the last Saturday of March by the WWF.
"Earth Hour is your chance to vote for Earth by shutting down your lights between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. your local time," the WWF website read.
The origin of the campaign can be traced back to Australia in 2007 when businesses and residents in Sydney turned off their lights for one hour to make a statement about energy use and global warming.
Moscow, Geneva, Budapest, Berlin, Rome, Barcelona, Helsinki, Oslo, Madrid, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Vienna are some European cities that will turn off in the name of sustainability all non-essential lights.

In Asia, cities like Bangkok, Singapore, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Seoul, New Delhi, Auckland and Shanghai will support the WWF initiative.
In North America, Toronto, Vancouver, New York and Chicago are among those that will go dark. In the South, cities including Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Valparaiso will take part.
Even the Davis research station in Antarctica will turn off its lights.
"This year Earth Hour asks people to commit to the event, big or small, for the coming year, taking Earth Hour beyond the hour," said Andy Ridley, co-founder and executive director of Earth Hour.
Cities participating in the global initiative will not just switch off their electricity, but will also plant greenery and install LED street lamps.

IS THE INTERNET DESTROYING PRIVACY?

In an interview with TechCrunch last year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said sharing private information online with the faceless masses had become a "social norm."

Interpretation: Privacy is a has-been luxury, a relic of a bygone, unwired era.

Today, oversharing has become typical of online social networking, with people publicizing real-time information of where they are (Foursquare, Gowalla) and what they're doing (Twitter, Facebook).

"It may be that social norms just haven’t completely developed yet, but we end up revealing so much more than we likely would have without the Internet, and we reveal it to a much wider range of people," Lorrie Cranor, director of the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University.

Wide Angle: Online Social Networking. We'll look at how social network sites are changing our lives, what happens to the photos, email and personal information we post to those sites, the potential dark site of social media and how high-speed data networks will change what we put online.

Whether we're constantly updating our Facebooks and flickrs or not, we still leave behind a virtual breadcrumb trail anytime we hop online, thanks to data tracking software, cookies and web bugs that log what we search for, where we land and what we do once we get there.

"In a commercial setting, it used to be that if you go into a store, the store knows what you bought, and if you buy with credit cards they can tie it to your name, and if you pay cash they may not even know who you are," Cranor said. "But they didn’t know all the things you took off the shelf, manipulated, put back on the shelf, thought about. On the Internet, they all have that."

Due to that online dossier about your habits, likes and dislikes, sites can serve up advertisements targeted directly to you.

Sure, plenty of websites offer privacy policies that explain what they will and won’t do with any personal information they collect from visitors, but Cranor's studies show that people typically ignore them and don’t understand the legalese, anyway.

And simply seeing a privacy policy without reviewing what it actually says often provides a false sense of security to consumers who might assume that "privacy" inherently implies protection from third-party intrusion.

BLOG: Free Internet for All

"They are plenty of privacy policies that say 'we collect whatever we want from you and we do whatever want with it.' And that’s a privacy policy," Cranor said. "It’s not a very protective privacy policy, but it is a privacy policy."

There aren’t any government policies in place to stop this type of data collection and tracking, either.

The web industry has relied on self-regulation to protect consumers' sensitive information, and research clearly indicates that it isn’t exactly a watchdog about the issue.

When Ashkan Soltani, an online privacy research and consultant, analyzed "third-party tracking beacons" on 50 of the most-visited sites, they dumped an average 64 tracking technologies (i.e. cookies and web bugs) onto users’ computers.

ANALYSIS: Do People Lie More Online?

The Federal Trade Commission and Commerce Department have expressed concerns about the ubiquity of data tracking online and the threats it poses to privacy, and there are currently no legal policies stopping web sites' bloodhound tendencies – though that might soon change.

On March 16, Soltani and others testified before the Senate Commerce Committee during its second hearing on online privacy issues.

At the forefront of the debate is whether Internet browsers should be required to offer a "Do Not Track" option that users can easily opt-in. Developed by Mozilla Firefox, the consumer protection feature will be included in the upcoming release of Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft recently announced.

"This would be a simplified way for consumers to voice their preference of whether or not they want to be tracked," Soltani said, distinguishing it from previous data tracking blockers that users would have to seek out and install.

HOWSTUFFWORKS: How the Internet Works

Despite the rampant tracking and data collection, neither Cranor at Carnegie Mellon or Soltani think the Internet has totally eroded the concept of personal privacy, like Mark Zuckerberg implied. Rather, online activity opens up more opportunities for potential privacy intrusions, and government policy is now slowly catching up to that reality.

"There’s new technology, new risks, new implications for society and we might need to compensate," Soltani said. "And we don’t want the legal system to be too reactionary or too overblown, and it's a good thing that laws move slowly because you never know other impacts of the law… But maybe it's time to discuss laws regarding normative societal concerns, such as [Internet] tracking."

Tendulkar never scared me but Lara, Gilchrist did: Shoaib

Colombo, March 19 (PTI): He has had some of the most memorable on-field battles with Sachin Tendulkar but maverick speedster Shoaib Akhtar claims he was never scared to bowl at the legendary batsman. Instead, it was dashing Australian 'keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist and West Indian legend Brian Lara who "scared the hell" out of him during his 14-year international career.

"Yes, that's true. But that doesn't mean I have no respect for Sachin. He is a legend and will always remain as one. But Sachin would never scare me. Guys like Gilchrist and Lara would scare the hell out of me," Akhtar, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket after the World Cup told espnstar.com in an interview.

Shoaib who played 46 Tests and 163 ODIs for Pakistan was in awe of Lara and Gilchrist. "Gilchrist would simply take me on. Lara was class apart. In fact, I would be so attracted to his persona that I wouldn't know where to bowl. His body-language was just too cool!"

For someone who has been in the news for his off-field activities as well as his on-field exploits feels that had the iconic former Pakistan captain Imran Khan been around during his playing days, things would have been different. "He (Imran) was like a father figure. I have missed him badly. If he would have been there, I would have become a better bowler and a better person, may be," he answered.

Talking about his regular run-ins with the PCB, Akhtar said that it is the system that made an anti-establishment man. "The system made me quite an anti-establishment fellow. Ever since I started playing cricket, I was told that, I wasn't good enough. Whether at the club level or national or international level, I was told I was never good enough. That made me more determined."

"My system refused to swim with the tide. I was exactly the opposite. In spite of this, I have played cricket with my head held high. No one can say I have compromised myself when playing for Pakistan. Have you ever seen that I been linked with match fixing?," he shot back.

Akhtar whose career was start-stop one due to numerous injuries including five major knee surgeries also spoke about playing through pain. "There have been days when five syringes would be inserted on each of my knees to draw out fluid. I would scream with pain because my knees would be swollen like melons and I would feel that someone was ripping off my thigh muscles. But next day, I would go there and fire the ball at close to 150 kmph or more. That's Shoaib Akhtar for you.

"There were two Shoaib Akhtars in me. One that told me to "give up cricket" and the other one that said "conquer the odds". The second one always prevailed. It's because of this today I am playing the World Cup."

He was a touch emotional as he termed his retirement as his second death.

"I am surrounded by some sort of emptiness and sadness. For 20 years, I have fought to play cricket. I fought injuries, I fought against so many things. Now I have decided to leave something I loved. It hurts."

Having got a lot of fame, money and adulation from the game, the star cricketer wants to give something back to the society. In fact, like his idol Imran Khan, Shoaib wants to build a hospital.

"I want to build a hospital in Islamabad. Somewhere in the remote hills where no one can imagine. I will lay the first brick and then God will help me do the rest. My real life begins now, the life away from the spotlight. There are so many things that I want to do now. I want to leave my mark on the common man."

He makes no bones about the fact the he wants to emulate Imran.

"What Imran has done is unimaginable. People call him a cricketer-turned-politician, but I call him a revolutionary, a visionary. When you step in his cancer hospital, you get the feel of what he has done. I want to emulate him."

Spacecraft Swings Into First Orbit Around Mercury

NASA’s Messenger spacecraft swung into position around Mercury Thursday night, making it the first spacecraft ever to orbit the innermost planet.
Engineers at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, 96 million miles from Mercury, received the signal confirming that Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) had completed its final maneuver at 9:10 pm EDT.
To slow down enough to get caught in Mercury’s gravitational field, Messenger fired its main thruster for 15 minutes. The burn slowed the spacecraft by 1,929 mph and used up 31 percent of its original fuel supply.
After finishing the burn, Messenger rotated to face the Earth by 9:45 p.m., and started transmitting data. Engineering and operations teams confirmed the maneuver went according to plan.
The event marks the end of a 6½-year journey for Messenger, which has made 12 laps around the solar system, two flybys past Earth, one past Venus and three past Mercury since launching in August 2004.
Although engineers still need to do some analysis to figure out the spacecraft’s exact orbit, they expect Messenger to swoop around Mercury in a highly elliptical orbit once every 12 hours. It will dip within 120 miles of Mercury’s surface at its closest point, and go out to 9,320 miles at its farthest.
The orbit goes nearly pole-to-pole, offset by about 7 degrees. That slight tilt is to help get a handle on the planet’s gravitational field, said principal investigator Sean Solomon, a planetary scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, in a press conference March 15.
Measurements of the gravitational field “will tell us something about Mercury’s composition, the size of the core and the structure of that core,” he said.

One of the mission’s main objectives is to figure out why Mercury’s core is so big compared to the cores of the other rocky planets. Another is to make high-resolution maps of the whole planet, some of which has still never been seen.
“Many on the science team have been involved from the very beginning,” Solomon said. “We are extremely excited to begin that mapping.”
Scientists also plan to search for water ice in craters at the poles which, despite Mercury’s proximity to the sun and scorching daytime temperatures, are stuck in eternal freezing shadow.
The spacecraft’s seven science instruments were turned off for orbit insertion, but they will reactivate March 23. The first orbital image, planned for March 29, will include some uncharted regions near Mercury’s south pole.
The science phase of the mission will begin April 4. The Messenger team will release data to the science community at six-month intervals, but will release images at least once a day throughout the mission, Solomon said.
“In addition to the global imaging we’ll be doing, we’ve targeted more than 2,000 areas for ultra-high-res with our narrow-angle camera. Many of them were not discovered until flybys,” he said. “We’ve got a long list.”

Ranbir Kapoor voted as the Sexiest Asian Man

The Rockstar of Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor has finally clinched the Sexiest Asian Man title, beating some strong competitors like John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan.
This Kapoor scion, who is famous for his high profile romances, topped the survey, which was conducted by the London Weekly, Eastern Eye.
The 28-year-old heartthrob of the nation says, “If the women did not like me I would feel that something is wrong, but it does feel good. I do understand that the fans I have comprise mainly of women, it feels good to be wanted by so many women.”
Meanwhile the editor of Eastern Eye said that the actor had claimed for this title with an overwhelming margin. The editor said, “Usually it is a closely fought contest, where as this year there was only one clear winner. Winning by large margin is remarkable when you take into consideration the very high profile men who were in the list.”
Ranbir made his acting debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. He has been going strong post his launch and has tasted every bit of the commercial success with hits like Rajneeti, Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani.
The Bollywood hunk John Abraham missed this spot and landed second on this. Hrithik Roshan got the third spot while R&B star Jay Sean got the fourth spot.
Surprisingly, the ladylove of Ranbir’s life also topped the list of the hottest women in the world.

Google Circles Social Networking Website Likely To Be Launched In May?

The search engine giant Google may announce its new social networking site namely Circles, according to a blog post. The new Circles website might be launched at Google’s annual I/O conference, which is scheduled on May 10 and 11.

Google’s annual I/O conference has so far seen many big launches like Google Wave, Google TV and many others. Facebook would be its chief rival, if Google’s Circles arrives.

Not much details are available as of now as the rumors have just started popping up. Still there is a long period of time for Circles launch, according to the rumors. And if at all Google has anything as such under development, then we would for sure get enough details about Circles in the form of rumors.

Though the source is not a reliable one, we really can expect from Google something like social networking website that still remains rather untapped area by the search engine king. So what would happen to Google’s Orkut, which is already losing its share in countries? Well, we have to wait and see that.

20 nations put on tsunami alert

At least 20 nations have been put on tsunami alert after the killer waves ravaged Japan following a major earthquake on Friday.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for Russia, United States, and Mexico. Other nations on the tsunami watch list include Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji.
In Philippine, officials are ordering an evacuation of coastal communities. The warning also extends to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Hundreds die in tsunami after 8.9 Japan earthquake

A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan's eastern coast on Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away boats, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control.

Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii and warnings blanketed the Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast.
Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai. Another 88 were confirmed killed and at least 349 were missing. The death toll was likely to continue climbing given the scale of the disaster.
The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0.
Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter.
"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.
The government ordered thousands of residents near a nuclear power plant in Onahama city to evacuate because the plant's system was unable to cool the reactor. The reactor was not leaking radiation but its core remained hot even after a shutdown. The plant is 170 miles (270 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.
Trouble was reported at two other nuclear plants as well, but there was no radiation leak at any.
Japan's coast guard said it was searching for 80 dock workers working on a ship that was swept away from a shipyard in Miyagi prefecture.
Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions because of the tsunami that crashed ashore, swallowing everything in its path as it surged several miles (kilometers) inland before retreating. The apocalyptic images of surging water broadcast by Japanese TV networks resembled scenes from a Hollywood disaster movie.
Large fishing boats and other sea vessels rode high waves into the cities, slamming against overpasses or scraping under them and snapping power lines along the way. Upturned and partially submerged vehicles were seen bobbing in the water. Ships anchored in ports crashed against each other.
The highways to the worst-hit coastal areas were severely damaged and communications, including telephone lines, were snapped. Train services in northeastern Japan and in Tokyo, which normally serve 10 million people a day, were also suspended, leaving untold numbers stranded in stations or roaming the streets. Tokyo's Narita airport was closed indefinitely.

A new turn in Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s split-up. Earlier, it was reported that the duo split-up due to Ranbir’s proximity to his ‘Rockstar’ actress Nargis Fakiri but now the real reason of their break-up is said to be marriage issue. Priyanka Chopra wants to marry six times in real life

Bollywood Actress Priyanka Chopra seems to have taken her role in her latest blockbuster movie “7 Khoon Maaf” a little too seriously! The versatile actress, who gets married seven times in this latest thriller, says she would love to marry at least six times in real life – BUT to the same man.
“I have been planning my wedding since as far back as I can remember! My ideal scenario is getting married six times (to the same man of course),” Priyanka revealed in the upcoming, second anniversary issue of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar.
The 28-year-old, one of the most eligible singles in tinsel town, already has elaborate plans set in her mind about the six spots and types of ceremonies she would like to have.
“My dadaji’s (grandfather’s) house in Ambala – my ‘big, fat Indian wedding’; underwater at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; a church in Las Vegas – wearing a short black dress and with the priest dressed as Elvis; the intimate ceremony – at a small, beautiful church in Locarno, Switzerland. It’s on top of a hill that overlooks parts of Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. She also wants to go in for a nikah.
“Only very close family and friends will be present; a nikah – I think it’s a beautiful, romantic ceremony – the curtains, the stolen glances, the words, and finally the acceptance… ‘Kabool hai’; and lastly, the groom’s choice! If my future groom survives all that, then we’ll survive anything!” she added.
The plans are all quite set of course, but Priyanka says marriage does not figure on her priority list as of now.
“There is so much happening on the work front right now, which is my priority. I will get married, but I can’t say when. It’s not really in my control. I am a hopeless romantic, so I’m waiting for the man who is meant to be with me; he may arrive today, or five years later,” she said.
In the meantime, her hectic schedules and film promotions will keep her on her toes.
She has almost finished the shoot of “Don – The Chase Continues”. She will start work on Karan Johar’s remake of “Agneepath” and then she has Anurag Basu’s “Barfee”, Kunal Kohli’s next, as well as “Krrish 2″.
In her interview to Harper’s Bazaar, the National award-winning actress has spoken about her journey to fame, the importance of awards, industry rivalry, her style, aspirations and her much-talked about chemistry with Shahid Kapoor.

Hrithik, Kareena To Star In Imtiaz Ali's Next?

A birdie chirpsthat there has been speculation about Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor starring together in a Sajid Nadiadwala production to be directed by Imtiaz Ali.

"But that's far from true. Don't they know history?" chirps the birdie. "Bebo was supposed to be part of Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, remember?

Though she's done films with her once special friend in movies like Yaadein, Main Prem Ki Diwani, Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and has maintained cordial relations, the past does haunt, no?"

5 Women’s Styles/Fashions That Men Hate

As most men chill on the uncomfortable periphery of fashion, we do develop a strong sense for what we hate on women. And while women do style partly for themselves (”I’m the real me!”) or for their female friends (“SOOOoooOOO GOOD!”), a chunk of it’s for guys. Ladies, if you’re listening, please read, and get a clue if you expect to ever receive a diamond fashion ring. Gents, you may or may not agree with this list. If I’m missing any, let me know, and I’ll add them to the post.

Cheek Piercing

cheek-piercing.jpg

Nothing like a fashion statement that looks accidental. You look like you were shrooming in a fun house with a nail gun, and the next morning you just said “fuck it, I’ll keep it.” Thank god you have a pice of jewelry randomly adorning your face. When you’ve run out of original places to stud your head, don’t go random. That’s like a musician saying “wehhh, all melodies have been done before. I’m gonna play random notes wherever and I’ll be so different I’ll be cool.” You’re not cool.

Acceptable Alternative:

Standard piercings, plus, on the right girl, eyebrow ring jewelry, or nose ring. Lip ring can work under very particular circumstances. You kinda have to be already hot.

Giant Sunglasses

At first I just felt bad for you, thinking an extraterrestrial symbiote had taken you as a host. How wrong I was. You may be proud that not the smallest beam in the slightest crack of space will get in your deflector shield eye booth, but you look like a bug on hind legs. A bug! The stick thin skin-and-bones body type completes the preying mantis fashion statement. While I do appreciate being able to catch the action behind me thanks to your pair of anti-theft convenience store convex mirrors, I’d rather you just BUZZ OFF. Yep - “buzz off”.

Acceptable Alternative:

Shades can be hot. Like any glasses, you just have to find something that fits your face. The goggles above don’t match any human face.

Excessive Foundation

foundation.jpg

Here’s the problem: lots of cover up is actually worth covering up. You may think that a pimple mount of height X necessitates a layer of foundation of X + 1 thickness, but really you’ve managed to expand the “problem area” to your entire face. Good luck playing the “success through dim lighting” card. You don’t look like porcelain, you look crusty. If you can’t tan, don’t manufacture a layer of grainy fakeskin. Some guys like pale chicks.

Acceptable Alternative:

Skin cream. Or, your actual face. The foundation’s not better than nothing.

Pets as Accessories

doggie-accessory.jpg

Living. Creatures. Are. Not. Accessories. While I appreciate, on some level, the pimping out of an otherwise evolutionary abomination into some kind of social use, this is a problem. You have no idea of the statements you make when you walk around with these fashion rats, or the thoughts that go through every guy’s mind. Images of fur and bow ties in a mulcher, or my personal favorite daytime fantasy, a bit of art I call “kicking of a dog through uprights.” We hate your dog, and we hate you.

Acceptable Alternatives:

Treating an animal like the companion it is. Get a real pet or walk alone.

High Belts

high-belt.jpeg

There’s beauty in proportion, and nothing messes with that more than a blatant misplacing of a standard item. If you’re willing to constrict your ribs, do us all a favor and wear a corset. At least it’ll make your boobs look good.

Acceptable Alternative:

A normal waist belt, if you need it at all. No stupidly thick belts, either.

* * *

I suppose Paris Hilton is to blame for much of the kind of shite we see every day. I think it’s time women got over her and her irritating style, and started using fashion for what it was meant to do - make women look hot.

Honourable mentions, thanks to comments:

Crocs - Indeed, fucking hideous. Unfortunately, it’s a bit unfair to pin these on girls, since guys wear them too, but they do know how to kill hotness with them.

Ugz (Uggs) boots - The name is as ugly as the boots themselves. Just what guys always wanted, right? Furry legs. Great.

And, for more excessive foundation, check out this pic of Cindy McCain (gah)

I had removed Capris, but I guess they did belong:

If Men Wrote Women’s Magazines

Women get all kinds of advice from magazines from how to dress to how to please a man in the bedroom, and even what to cook for us. And while it’s not all bad (with hotties like Kristen Bell and Jessica Alba on the cover) these mags are lacking much needed male insights. For example, we’re actually not that interested in your hair and we definitely don’t care about your shoes. Don’t get us wrong, we love the heels… we just don’t see why you need so many pairs that quite frankly, to us look the same. But if Women’s magazines were actually written by men, there wouldn’t be so much confusion about what we want. Here are some article titles, written by men that get straight to the point.
